LHDN error ERR236: general public TIN on a line that is not classification 004

Updated 18 October 2026

Short answer

ERR236 means the document uses the general public TIN EI00000000010 with the ID set to NA, but a line carries a classification code other than 004. LHDN accepts that buyer only on classification 004 (consolidated e-invoice). Put walk-in sales into the monthly consolidated e-invoice, or enter the buyer's real TIN and ID.

What LHDN's message says

ERR236 (Taxpayer validator): “Where General TIN (010) and ID Type BRN/NRIC = NA, applicable for Classification Code 004 only” Read LHDN's guidance for ERR236

What it means

The general public TIN EI00000000010 is a placeholder for buyers who did not ask for an e-invoice. LHDN pairs it with classification code 004, the code for a consolidated e-invoice. When a single walk-in sale is filed on its own with that placeholder buyer and its usual product classification, LHDN's Taxpayer validator refuses it.

Why it happens

This usually happens when a POS or online store sends every sale to MyInvois straight away, including sales where nobody gave buyer details.

LHDN lists these causes:

  • The document uses General TIN 010 with ID Type BRN or NRIC set to “NA”. This combination is only permitted when the e-Invoice Classification Code is 004. Any other classification code will fail validation

How to fix it

  1. Decide whether the buyer asked for an e-invoice in their own name.
  2. If not, do not file the sale on its own. Record it as a walk-in sale so it goes into that month's consolidated e-invoice, due within 7 calendar days after the month ends.
  3. If the buyer did ask, enter their real TIN and ID (the BRN for a business, MyKad or passport for an individual) and keep the line's real classification code.
  4. Submit the corrected document as a new e-invoice.

LHDN's recommended resolution:

  • Verify whether Classification Code 004 is applicable to the transaction.
  • If Classification Code is not 004, provide the actual taxpayer identification information.

How envoice handles it

When LHDN rejects a document, envoice shows a Rejection reason box on it. Each line names the field at fault, explains the cause in plain language, gives the fix where envoice knows it, and quotes LHDN's own sentence with a link to LHDN's guidance for that code. The explanation is shown in English or Bahasa Melayu.

For this code, envoice's rejection reason reads: This is a walk-in (general public) sale, but a line carries a classification code other than 004. File walk-in sales through the consolidated flow, or set every line to classification 004.

Walk-in sales recorded in envoice are held for the monthly consolidated e-invoice, which envoice files with the general public TIN and classification 004 for you.

Click Fix & resubmit to open the invoice form prefilled from the rejected document, correct the field, and submit it as a new e-invoice. The shop owner also gets one email when a document is rejected, so a rejection is not discovered weeks later. See Why was my document rejected?

Frequently asked questions

What does LHDN error ERR236 mean?

ERR236 means the document uses the general public TIN EI00000000010 with the ID set to NA, but a line carries a classification code other than 004. LHDN accepts that buyer only on classification 004 (consolidated e-invoice). Put walk-in sales into the monthly consolidated e-invoice, or enter the buyer's real TIN and ID.

What is classification code 004?

004 is LHDN's classification code for a consolidated e-invoice. It is the only classification LHDN accepts when the buyer is the general public TIN EI00000000010 with the ID set to NA.

Can I just change every line to 004?

Code 004 marks a consolidated e-invoice. The usual fix is to put the sale into the monthly consolidated e-invoice, which carries 004, rather than relabel one sale.
