How does a buyer request an e-invoice from a shop?

Updated 18 October 2026

Short answer

Ask the shop for an e-invoice in your name, at the counter or through the shop's request link or QR code if it has one. You give the receipt number, date and total, plus your TIN, ID (MyKad, passport or business registration number), name, email and address. The shop then issues an individual e-invoice to LHDN MyInvois and you receive it by email. If you do not ask, your sale goes into the shop's monthly consolidated e-invoice.

Why you have to ask

Most retail buyers never need an e-invoice, so a shop gives you a normal receipt and later files your sale inside one consolidated e-invoice for the month, under the general public TIN. That document does not carry your name. If you need an e-invoice in your own name, for example because a company is buying or you are claiming the purchase as a business expense, you have to ask for it.

What to give the shop

  • The receipt: receipt or invoice number, date of purchase and total.
  • Your TIN. A Malaysian individual without a TIN can use the general TIN EI00000000010 with their MyKad number; a foreign individual uses EI00000000020 with their passport number.
  • Your ID: the 12-digit SSM business registration number for a company, or MyKad, passport or army ID for an individual.
  • Your name, email address and full address with postcode, city and state.
  • Optional: phone number and SST registration number.

At the counter

The simplest way is to ask before you pay. The cashier records you as a named buyer instead of a walk-in sale, and the e-invoice is issued for that sale on its own.

After you leave: through a request portal

Many shops print a QR code on the receipt or stand a poster at the counter so you can ask later without queueing. On a shop that uses envoice, the flow looks like this:

  1. Scan the QR code on the receipt or the counter poster, or open the shop's request link. A QR on an envoice receipt fills in the receipt number, date and total for you.
  2. Enter your details as listed above. The form says that your details go to LHDN MyInvois only to issue the e-invoice.
  3. Submit. If the shop reviews requests first, which is the default, you get a confirmation email and the e-invoice PDF arrives by email once the shop approves it. If the shop files requests straight away, the e-invoice is submitted at once and the PDF is emailed to you and offered for download, with its LHDN UUID.
A receipt can only be claimed once. If someone else has already requested an e-invoice for it under a different email, the portal says so and asks you to contact the shop.

What the shop does with your request

envoice looks for the recorded sale with the same receipt number and amount. When it finds one, your e-invoice uses that sale's line items, and the sale is taken out of the month's consolidated e-invoice so it is not reported twice. If the month was already consolidated and validated, envoice files a credit note against the consolidated e-invoice before your individual one stands on its own. With no matching sale, the shop can still approve, and the e-invoice is issued as a single line for the amount you entered.

Can a shop say no?

  • A business with annual turnover below RM3 million is exempt from e-invoicing and does not have to issue one. See the RM3 million exemption.
  • During LHDN's interim relaxation period, which runs to 31 December 2027 for businesses with turnover up to RM5 million, a shop may decline a request for an individual e-invoice as long as it files the consolidated e-invoice.
  • A shop that uses envoice's review step can reject a request with a reason, for example when the receipt details do not match. The reason is emailed to you.

For shops: offer buyers a request link

In envoice, switch on the portal under Settings > Portal. You get a link (envoice.my/request/your-shop, or your own your-shop.envoice.my address on Pro and Enterprise), a printable counter poster and a QR image for your receipt template. Shopify stores can also add a request link to the thank-you page. Requests wait in Documents > Requests for your approval unless you switch the review step off.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get an e-invoice from a shop?

Ask the shop for an e-invoice in your name, at the counter or through its request link or QR code. Give your receipt details, TIN, ID, name, email and address, and the shop issues an individual e-invoice to LHDN and sends it to you.

I do not have a TIN. Can I still get an e-invoice?

Yes. A Malaysian individual without a TIN can use the general TIN EI00000000010 with their MyKad number, and a foreign individual can use EI00000000020 with their passport number.

Can I ask for an e-invoice after I have left the shop?

Yes, if the shop accepts later requests. Many shops print a request QR on the receipt or offer a request link, so you can enter the receipt number, date and total yourself.

How will I receive the e-invoice?

By email, as a PDF with LHDN's validation QR code. On an envoice request portal you also see the LHDN UUID and can download the PDF when the request is filed straight away.

Can a shop refuse to issue an e-invoice?

Sometimes. A business below RM3 million turnover is exempt, and during the relaxation period to 31 December 2027 a shop with turnover up to RM5 million may decline individual requests as long as it files its consolidated e-invoice.
