Does my business need a digital certificate for e-invoice?

Updated 18 October 2026

Short answer

Not if you file through envoice. envoice submits to LHDN through the MyInvois API in document version 1.0, which LHDN accepts unsigned, so you only need the Client ID and Client Secret from your MyInvois ERP registration. A digital certificate is needed for LHDN's signed version 1.1, which envoice does not use. Other software may use version 1.1, so ask your provider.

Two document versions, one difference

MyInvois document versionSigned?Digital certificate needed?
1.0No, unsignedNo
1.1Yes, digitally signedYes, a signing certificate

Whether you need a certificate depends on which version your software submits, not on the size of your business. envoice submits version 1.0, unsigned, on LHDN's test system and in production alike.

What you need instead

  1. An ERP registration for envoice in MyInvois, inside the MyTax portal.
  2. The Client ID and Client Secret that registration gives you.
  3. Those two values entered in envoice under Settings, then the LHDN tab.

The step-by-step screens are in how to get your MyInvois credentials. envoice builds and submits each document from there. Every document LHDN validates comes back with its UUID and QR code.

What about the MyInvois portal?

If you key invoices into LHDN's MyInvois portal by hand, no digital certificate is needed either.

When a certificate does matter

A certificate matters when the software that submits for you uses the signed version 1.1, or when you build your own integration on it. Then the certificate belongs to whoever signs the documents. Do not assume the answer for envoice applies to every e-invoice provider: ask yours which version it submits.

An ERP registration for envoice in MyInvois, the Client ID and Client Secret it gives you, and those values entered in envoice under Settings, LHDN.
